Greetings dear readers(well, probably just reader – hi Mara!)
As many of you know, I am not a fan of Christmas music. I’m not particularly religious so the songs with religious overtones I don’t dig on. What’s left tends to be a set of the same fifteen or so songs that you hear every year from birth to death. For about six weeks it’s on the radio, in every store you walk into, all over television and I’m over it. So, this year I decided to search around for better music and the result is what follows. It really is random (and is meant to be played in no particular order), but is chock full of awesome and I hope it brings some funky goodness to your holiday season.
ps- I welcome comments, suggestions, etc! If there’s something you think should (or shouldn’t!) be here, please comment and let me know
Clarence Carter – Back Door Santa
Funk Machine – Soul Santa
Jackson 5 – Santa Claus is Coming to Town
JD McDonald – Boogaloo Santa Claus
Jethro Tull – Christmas Song
Twisted Sister – Let It Snow
Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You
Ike and Tina Turner – Merry Christmas Baby
Ron Sexsmith – Maybe This Christmas
SimonĀ Garfunkel – 7 O’Clock News Silent Night
Squirrel Nut Zippers – Carolina Christmas
Tommy & Johnny Cash – That Christmasy Feeling
The Kinks – Father Christmas
The Pougues Fairytale of New York
The Ramones – Merry Christmas I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight
The Ventures – Blue
The Ventures – Snowflakes
The Who – Christmas
taste in music is subjective – you like something or you don’t. I like most of those 15 or so songs they play ad nauseum, but then they’ll play a version that I don’t like. On your list Jackson 5 “Santa Claus is coming to town” I can’t stand. Not to disparage the obvious talent of the young Jacksons, just don’t like rock n’ rolled versions of songs that shouldn’t be rock n’ rolled. But at least I like that version better than Bruce Springsteen’s.
so I take it the Twisted Sister cover of ‘Let It Snow’ isn’t on your list of favorites either?
I would suggest checking out the Pandora station called “Rockin’ Christmas” — it really is pretty great, even for bah-hum-bugs like you and Luke.
I’ll check it out – but one Beiber and I’m out!
